There are a number of basic user and server management procedures that
a reasonably technically-savvy business owner or manager should be
able to do themselves. These are also the procedures I most commonly
receive calls on. In the coming months, I'll post instructions for
accomplishing some of these tasks, as well as related
recommendations/best practices where applicable. These instructions
are general, and may not apply to your specific situation or security
requirements, so please, if you aren't sure, call, email, or ask a
question below before making changes.
Description: How to restart your server. (I know this is really basic for some of you, but I've often received calls or questions about it.)
Verify that all users are logged
off the server before restarting, as they could lose data.
Log
on to the server as administrator.
Go to Start -> Shut Down.
In the box below "What do you want the computer to
do?" click the arrow and then select "Restart."
In the box below "Shutdown Event Tracker" click the
arrow and select the
closest approximation of the reason
you are restarting the server. (See notes.)
Click "OK."
The server may take several minutes to shutdown,
and several more to complete restarting. Do not interrupt the
process.
If desired, log back on to the server once it
has finished restarting.
Notes:
You mustselect a reasonaside from "Other" to shut
down or restart the server. "OK" will remain grayed out until
you do.
If desired, you can also enter a note
explaining the specific reason. The reasons are logged (whether you add a note
or not) for issue tracking and troubleshooting purposes.
