Microsoft has recently released a new Remote Desktop Client (Terminal Services Client 6.0) that includes some substantive improvements over previous versions. This is the remote desktop client that ships with Vista, and enhancements include:
  • Greater Security, including Server and Network authentication.
  • Monitor Spanning: For those of you who use more than one monitor on your local machine, you can now use both for a terminal session as well.
  • Plug and Play Redirection:  More of your devices, including printers, will work over the remote connection.
  • 32-Bit Color and Font Smoothing: Better resolution and stronger grahpics support overall mean the appearance of the remote desktop is much better.
You'll like the visual improvements, but the security enhancements are the real draw here. Network administrators will love this, particularly those supporting remote connections to sensitive data, such as healthcare information - it allows them to secure the connection using a variety of strong authentication protocols that were previously either difficult to implement or simply not available.

I've been using this client on my Vista system for a few months now, and I really like it. I also think its a little faster and more responsive than previous versions - perhaps they've streamlined the protocol.

You must have this version to connect to Vista or Windows Longhorn (the new server software due out in 2007), but for now its optional for existing terminal services environments.

As far as I know, it's only available for Windows XP and Server 2003. You can download it through Microsoft Update (It's listed in the "Optional Software" section) or by going here.
